Palazzo Cini, also known as Cini Palace, was built in the 16th century and has a long and fascinating history.

Palazzo Cini was purchased by one of the greatest Italian collectors of the 20th century in 1919. It is located in the Sestiere of Dorsoduro, overlooking the Grand Canal, and hides an enchanting art collection inside.

Who is the great collector who led to the founding of the Palazzo Cini Gallery? It is the philanthropist Vittorio Cini, Count of Monselice and former Minister of Communications of the Kingdom of Italy.

He has also created and dedicated the Fondazione Giorgio Cini to his son, who tragically died during a flight over Cannes. That's right, the same foundation linked to the protection of the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

His love for the arts and his immense wealth meant that Vittorio Cini was able to create one of the most conspicuous private art collections in Italy.

Part of this collection was kept at the Monselice Castle (in the province of Padua, a few dozen kilometers from Venice), while part was kept right at the Cini Palace.

Vittorio Cini's dream, however, was to create a major exhibition at Palazzo Grassi with all the most significant works from his extraordinary collection.

Unfortunately, his wish was never granted and, after his death in 1977, his estate was equally divided among his children.

In 1981, one of Vittorio's daughters, Yana Cini Alliata di Montereale, decided to donate part of her father's collection to the Giorgio Cini Foundation, with the condition that it be exhibited to the public in the rooms of Palazzo Cini.

The museum was then opened 3 years later, going on to expand the following years with further donations from Yana and Ylda, Yana's twin sister.
