A day trip from Venice to the Dolomites: what to consider
The magic mountain scenery that you can see in many photographs is what is making you think about organizing your day trip.
You can organize your Venice day trip to Dolomites all by yourself, or decide to join organized small group tours or a private tour. In this case, you will just need to think about what to wear (indeed it's cold during winter).
However, if you are planning a day trip by yourself, here we list several ways to reach the Dolomites from Venice.
The distance between Venice and the Dolomites
There are so many things to visit in the Dolomite mountains so it's not so easy to give you a precise distance.
In any case, Belluno, the main gateway to the Dolomites, is located at about 100 kilometers (63 miles).
Cortina d'Ampezzo, the most famous attraction of this region, also called the Queen of the Dolomites, is located at about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Venice.
So, let's see how you can get from our floating city to the beautiful mountain range.
Venice day trip to the Dolomites by train
If you prefer organizing your Dolomites day tour by yourself but you do not feel like renting a car and driving all the way to the mountains, you can take the train.
However, you should be aware that it might not be as comfortable as you think.
From Santa Lucia train station you can take your train to Calalzo di Cadore, one of the main towns of the enchanting area called Cadore. From there, you have to take a bus (Dolomiti bus company) and then reach Cortina.
It's not so easy to proceed like this and it is really time consuming (not less than 4 hours per way!).
If you want to take the train to Cortina, we suggest that you stay in the mountains for a long weekend at least.
Day trip to the Dolomites by bus
In order to reach the beautiful scenery of the Dolomites you can also decide to take the bus.
There are two bus companies that can take you from Venice to the Dolomite mountains.
One is a low cost company called Flixbus. The other one is the ATVO, passing by the beautiful city of Treviso.
Traveling by bus you can reach Cortina in less than 2 hours.
Venice to Dolomites by car
In our opinion, this is the best way for your day trips to the Dolomites from Venice.
You can easily reach it in less than 3 hours of self drive (or, in case you are interested), with a private driver.
The car will give you the opportunity for a magnificent road trip where you can actually admire and stop by the most beautiful lakes and enjoy the best views.
You can plan your itinerary including all the things you are most interested in and you can decide to do amazing hiking. Most people coming to the Dolomites decide to proceed this way because they are actually free.
In case you don't want to drive or you do not feel at ease discovering the Dolomites by yourself, you can be driven to the Dolomites by a private driver and then meet an excellent guide on the spot. You also can decide to share the transfer to the mountains with other participants and yet have the best time.
This is surely the method we recommend to you to plan your perfect day trip to the Dolomites.
