THE MILK OF DREAMS
Starting on the 23rd of April, the 59th international art exhibition is just two months away from opening its doors to the public.
The Biennale will take place from the 23rd of April up to the 27th of November. Cecilia Alemanni, this year's curator of Biennale, is currently Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art, the program of public art of the urban park in New York, and is the past curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2017.
Together with Roberto Cicutto, president of "La Biennale Venezia", they released a press conference on the 2nd of February explaining in detail what are the main features, what are the main exhibition venues, and what to expect from this year's international art exhibition that will see 1433 pieces of art exposed for the public.
THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME
"The Milk of Dreams" is the title chosen for the 2022 Biennale art of Venice, taken from the homonymous book written by the surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). In the book, she describes an imaginary world in which everything and everyone can change and can be transformed into something else, going beyond what is normal, creating new other life forms.
Present-day objects, figures, and creatures enter the realm of infinite possibilities of change, becoming at the same time - as stated during the press conference - companions on an imaginary journey through the metamorphoses of bodies and definitions of the human.
Three main principles guided the creation of this international art exhibition: the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses, the relationship between individuals and technologies, and the present-day connection between bodies and the Earth.
Questions such as what constitutes life, what is a normal life (especially after the pandemic), what are our responsibilities towards the Earth, and many more revolving around certain key themes will be answered by the international artists.
La Biennale di Venezia was forced to postpone this edition by one year, an event that had only occurred during the two World Wars since 1895. So the very fact that this Exhibition can open is somewhat extraordinary: its inauguration is not exactly the symbol of a return to normal life, but rather the outcome of a collective effort that seems almost miraculous.
It sounds like it will be a very interesting year for the biennale arte of Venice, which will host more than 200 contemporary artists exposing around 1500 new works and projects, five new countries will participate for the first time in their history in the art exhibition: Republic of Cameroon, Namibia, Sultanate of Oman, Nepal, and Uganda.
Artists coming from all over the world will display their creations during the international exhibition. And this is what makes the biennale arte so special; its variety of exhibitions and the fact that every year there are different pavillions!
Artistic methods conceived specifically for the art exhibition that was never seen before will shape the magical world of the Central Pavillion and the other surroundings for all the summer until November.
The milk of dreams will take place in both the central pavilion at Giardini (in Castello) and in many different palaces of the city, including palaces facing the canal grande, smaller residencies, and the Arsenale.
BIENNALE ARCHITECTURE IN 2021
Last year, La Biennale di Venezia Architettura, the architecture art exhibition, saw a lot of participation and interest, with around 300.000 tickets sold, beating the 2018 exhibition.
Roberto Cicutto was happy to tell the numbers out loud, congratulating the 114 architects and the curators that made last year's exhibition a success. But this year, la Biennale di Venezia hopes to beat these numbers and attract even more visitors and art lovers from all over the world
